The village of Craonne, now famous for its “song of Craonne”, was the stage of bitter battles between the French and the Germans from the very beginning of the First World War.
In April-May 1917 what remained of the village was destroyed by French artillery. The site was then classified as a “red zone” and a ‘new’ village was built below it between 1921 and 1927, thanks to the support of Sweden in particular who financed the construction of the town hall.
The site of “Old Craonne” is managed by the French National Forest Office. Today it houses an arboretum and a mini-walk that included several information signs to help you discover the traces of the old village.
