Ever since the 12th century, Liesse has been the destination for a major pilgrimage undertaken by the kings and common people of France. The history of the basilica is strongly marked by the legend of the Black Virgin, displayed for the veneration of the faithful. Inside the chapel, a slide show illustates the legend, which was brought back from the Crusades. It continues to be a major destination for pilgrimages, which once welcomed the royal cortège of Louis 7th or Marshal Juin. Countless souvenirs and thanksgiving plaques offered by illustrious or anonymous pilgrims can still be seen. Guided tours on Sundays from 3 to 5 pm and on request.
