The current Laon cathedral is heir to an ancient building built under Carolingian rule and destroyed during the communal insurrection of 1112.
The mid-12th century, a period of economic and urban expansion, saw the start of the construction of one of the most beautiful examples of early gothic architecture.
Indeed, the new building places great emphasis on light, with 4-level elevation (archways, gallery, triforium, high windows), its large rose windows, lighting which is enhanced by the use of limestone for its construction.
Completed towards 1235, the cathedral underwent major restorations in the 19th century, and again since the year 2000.
