At the foot of the Fortress, a garden of Capitulars. The medieval garden of Coucy is made up of a garden of medicinal plants, a vegetable garden and an orchard, generally located in the middle of the monks’ tombs. There were 29 varieties in the Middle Ages (Pumpkin, mixed green salad, beets…). Everything is geometrically laid out, the earth squares go by 4 or by a multiple of 4, a number that recalls the 4 cardinal points or the 4 elements. There is a fountain, a reference to Baptism;the garden is closed, in remembrance of Mary who bore a child while remaining a virgin. A garden of Eden, mystical symbol of Adam and Eve… the gardens are delimited by plaited little branches.
