Route départementale 18
Built in 1877, this fort belongs to Séré de Rivières’ system of defence which controlled access to Paris via the Vesle, Oise and Ainse valleys. It provided optical communication between the forts protecting Laon and Soissons. Its buried rampart and use of freestone rapidly rendered it obsolete against the new melinite explosives invented in 1885. It was here that the first tests using the new melinite shells were carried out in 1886. The fort was downgraded two years before the start of the war, in 1912, but still played a decisive role on 23 October 1917 during the Battle of Malmaison.
