This village was reconstructed at the crossroads of the Laon-Fismes road and the Chemin des Dames. On this location, since the mid-19th century, there was a sugar refinery which was already no longer in service in 1914. In September 1914, the German position of the sugar refinery was the site of intense and vain attacks by British troops. Every year in April-May, an important religious and military ceremony is organised to commemorate the battles of 1917. Traditionally, Cerny is considered the birthplace of Saint Remy (437-533), bishop of Reims who baptised Clovis.
