This imposing monument was commissioned by the Vernes family to commemorate the death of their son, Marcel, and his co-pilot, Jean Peinaud, who died during an air battle at this location in 1917.
During an observation mission of this sector close to Vailly-sur-Aisne, their Farman F61 was shot down and crashed near the Folemprise farm.
