The California Plateau at the heart of the Chemin des Dames is, like Verdun, an emblematic location of the First World War. And yet for a long time, the California Plateau and the Chemin des Dames were associated with the bitter failure of the Nivelle offensive of April 1917, the mutinies that ensued and the rupture of summer 1918, and were doomed to be eclipsed after the 1st world war. Prior to 1914, the California Plateau, above the former village of Craonne, was a place for taking walks and having fun. After the war, pine trees were planted in this red zone, as the soil was no longer suitable for cultivation. Those who walk in this area today can follow the marked out footpaths.
