The first of the humanist works on Our Lady of Liesse concerns the miracle of 1566, in which Nicole Obry, of Vervins, was exorcised of 26 demons. This marks a turning point in the history of devotional booklets and miracles, marking a transition from the flamboyant, anonymous booklets (1480–1560)—each about thirty pages long—to the booklets of the age of controversies (1560–1660). The booklet on the miracle of 1566 was written by a famous professor of Hebrew in Paris; it comprises more than 300 pages and recounts precise historical facts, which stands in stark contrast to the pamphlets of the previous generation.
This lecture, led by Mr. Bruno Maes (Senior Lecturer in Modern History at the University of Lorraine), will be preceded30 minutes earlier by the General Assembly of the association, whose president is Mr. Jean-Christophe Dumain.
