This exhibition retraces the life and work of Lucien Laby, soldier, auxiliary doctor and artist. His notebooks, drawings and letters illustrate how the experience of the front, lived from the inside but at a distance from the front line, nourished a graphic work that was at once sensitive, ironic and lucid.
The exhibition pays tribute to a modest and singular witness, whose line and words shed new light on the memory of the war, and is based on the Lucien Laby collection, acquired by the Département in 2023. This exceptional corpus includes several illustrated manuscript notebooks, wartime correspondence, drawings, sketches and caricatures, as well as post-war paintings…
