Did you know that under the Ancien Régime, animals and even corpses were put on trial? Can you imagine the harshness of the punishments that, even 200 years ago, could land you in the galleys or the bagne for a simple theft?
From marital and family quarrels to property disputes, from everyday accidents to the most sordid crimes: since the Middle Ages, justice has been everywhere.
Through some twenty trials that took place in the Aisne, the Archives départementales look back at this history, revealing emblematic or surprising trials, to better trace the evolution of justice over the centuries.
