Since the 12th century, Liesse has been an important place of pilgrimage for the kings and people of France. The history of the basilica is strongly marked by the legend of the Black Madonna, who is on display for the veneration of the faithful. In the chapel, a diorama presents the highlights of this legend brought back from the Crusades. Today, the chapel remains a major place of pilgrimage, having welcomed in the past the royal cortege of Louis VII, as well as Marshal Juin… Numerous souvenirs and ex-votos donated by pilgrims both famous and unknown can still be found here.
