This monument was erected on the site of the village of Ailles, which was razed to the ground in 1917 during artillery preparations for the Nivelle offensive. 1923 saw the definitive end of the commune’s administrative existence, when it became part of Chermizy. The monument, the only reminder of the former commune, was thus erected in 1933 thanks to the Touring Club de France, and bears the singular epitaph, “Ici fut Ailles”…
