The church was destroyed during the First World War, but left as it was to bear witness to the ravages of the conflict, and its ruins can still be seen today. But it was also here, in June 1917, that three soldiers of the 18th Infantry Regiment – Casimir Canel, Alphonse Didier and Jean-Louis Lasplacettes – were shot for refusing to return to the front. Another of their comrades, Vincent Moulia, was also to be executed, but managed to escape.2009, a commemorative plaque was affixed to the wall of the adjoining cemetery to remind us of this sinister episode…
